This week has been tame. I did do some adjusting to my biking training however.
Running:
This week I am on week 4 of the marathon training program I’m doing Five 3 minute intervals with 1 minute of walking in between intervals. I’m right around 2 miles for 20 minutes. For my Ironman I want to be around 10 minute miles so I’m on pace for that. For my actual marathon I would like to be closer to the 8 minute mark, but we’ll see how that plays out.
Biking:
This is where I spent some time this week. After doing some reading on how to use my new Node 2 monitor for my bike; I have discovered I’ve been training less than optimally for my Ironman. For the Ironman I want to pedal at a very high cadence. Cadence is simply a measure of how fast you are pedaling the cranks on your bike. 1 revolution is 1 cadence in a 60 second window. For the Ironman I should be around 92ish cadence. I’ve been training around 65, this means I’m “mashing” my pedals and burning fini ...

I did NOT do this but I'm in the video at 1:07 and 3:28. I'm easy to pick out - I am wearing blue with shorts on, in January.

This past week has been an interesting one.
Running:
I started my marathon training this week. I found a 26 week program that will get me marathon ready and I intend on sitting to it day by day, sorta. I skipped the first two weeks of the training program and started on week 3. I didn’t think it was a good use of my time to start with ‘walking’. Instead this week was intervals of 2 minutes of running followed by 1 minute of walking. I stuck to it my first time but on subsequent runs I pushed my running intervals farther to the 3 minute mark. My legs felt good so why not?
Biking:
I continue with my bike trainer. Once a day I get on my bike and kick my own ass. After reading some more of my triathlete bible, I’m mixing up the intensities of my workouts. With this adjustment I will be doing 3 workouts that are more aerobic style work outs, with 3 others being anaerobic. This will build my cardiovascular system while also strengthening my power output ability under stress.
On S ...

First off let me introduce myself. I am Travis Bugh and I hail from the city of Caledonia, Michigan. I have decided to record my progress for training to complete my first Ironman triathlon. I have never blogged and to be honest I am a terribly introverted person. After some gentle nudging from a close personal friend of mine I’m going to move out of my comfort zone a bit and share my experience. I will be updating the entry and will a breakdown of my weekly workouts along with my thoughts and perceived gains.
For those who don’t know the Ironman is roughly a 140 mile triathlon. It is a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and full 26.2 mile marathon in one day.
Many of my friends immediately ask me ‘why?’ upon hearing this news. The answer isn’t nearly as simple as many would like.
· The challenge
o The Ironman is widely respected and known. People don’t have to be fitness guru’s to know that 140 ...
