Over Twenty Years

June 30th, 1990: Kings Quest V and a small group of friends huddled around the Sperry PC with EGA Monitor. This was the day that started it all. The PC games were vastly different than the Commodore VIC-20 or 64 we had played previously. This was no Atari console.. this was the future of PC gaming.

No one would have remotely thought that for more than twenty years we would have survived as a gaming group, a guild.

In the early days of Kings Quest I, Police Quest I, Space Quest I, Bard's Tale, and other games were shared by pulling multiple chairs to view the singular personal computer. We soon realized that we were not the only ones, and the question, posed as a statement, “There must be more like us, who enjoy taking turns and sharing the experience of a game.” From the days of 1984 to 1990, we had no idea what we would become, or how far technology would grow in our lifetime, but our passion for this form of entertainment was real, and for that we had no choice but to respect and seek other like minded people.

That day sparked many actions and conversations. It was quite common to huddle around the sixteen color glow of the monitor. Laibach or Einsturzende Neubauten set the tone from the single speaker record & cassette player, and the group of cohorts discussing every possible option and strategy to solve the puzzle being presented in PC game format, was commonplace. A single player game, made social.

Our band of adventurers was changed forever by the beta and release of Ultima Online. For the first time we could share our experiences with others outside the single room, and forever live in the beliefs we had acquired over our time.  The beginning which preceded that day was minor in retrospect. Ultima Online, Dark Age of Camelot, and many other games took shape as our guild and community began to grow. New friends became old friends and the platform for which we share those experiences has changed a great deal from that first day to our present.

Even now we have single player games that the guild enjoys together, Elder Scrolls and Neverwinter Nights for example, but instead of several chairs in one room, we have hundreds of people communicating from the privacy of their own homes and offices, adorned headsets for voice over IP (Internet Protocol), and these individuals from various walks of life come together in common interest.

The setting may have changed, but the beliefs have not.

Enjoyment of the game is our priority. It does not matter what class of character, or experience in a game, nor does it matter what part of the world you live, God(s) you pray to, or language you speak. What is important is that in every moment you spend in a game is to your liking, and in support of those around you.

We have been called socialists from time to time, and quite literally what does that word infer if not to be social. Those who craft items in a game do not charge for them, as money and barter items are aplenty, and there will always be more. Taking the time to assist members in obtaining and reaching their goals, as well as your own, is very similar in nature to the days of swapping chairs so that a friend may give their shot at solving a quest, puzzle, or responding to an in-game conversation. Again, the means by which we perform these actions may have changed over the years, but the fundamental idea and gesture has not.

To each their own and without judgment as your goal is our goal and vice versa.

We are a diverse group, with hundreds of games and more than a million hours of in-game experience to share with the world through Guilds and Communities as this one.

We only hope that each and every member of the Order of Laibach remembers where they came from, where they are going, and takes all of us with them. As we are individuals, we are a group, and most often our goals are one in the same.

By joining this site you are joining the community. To become an official member of the Order of Laibach, please utilize the “Contact” form and tell us why you wish to be part of such a group.

A Note to Intellectual Free Thinkers

Before moving into the brief history noted with in these pages, it would be wise of our Guild, the Order of Laibach, to make a note to the reader in regard to this and subsequent documents.

The modern Massively Multiplayer Game is itself a general work of art, comprised of all the components necessary to be deemed “creative” by the skeptical public eye. With the ability for individuals to create public communities, interacting, sharing experiences, without race, religion, or political alignment, a form of utopian society has emerged. The power of these cultures is yet to be determined, as their power over real world events has yet to be predicted. At times it would appear that the interaction is no longer individual versus individual, rather community versus community.

Every game from single player to the extreme multiplayer is an “interest” that brings individuals into communities. The same may be proven for almost any “interest”.

The principal of which the Order of Laibach was founded is based upon selected theories and belief structures revolving around two groups of artists and modern intellectuals, Laibach and NSK. Many of the symbols used by the Order are those believed to be of angels and demons from historical texts, translations, and ritualistic ceremony.  The symbols themselves are Enochian in origin and considered political and religious works of art.  They are to be deemed as holding no power beyond the perceptions and belief of the reader.

Dragons live underwater.

In no way does the Order believe everything, question nothing, nor stand behind one particular statement of beliefs or values.
